8vo, second edition, four volume set, pp, xlviii, 515, vii, 516, viii, 432, iv, 306, index, engraved frontispiece to volumes 1, 2  & 4 as called for, fairly recently rebound in gilt titled deep brown sheepskin with raised bands and strengthened hinges, some foxing and off-setting, bookplate on the leading paste-down endpaper to each volume, marbled endpapers and fore-edges.

 

Godwin [1756-1836] was an English Journalist, Philosopher and Novelist and featured prominently in the radical circles of London in the 1790's.   He was married to the feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft who died at childbirth.   Their daughter later known as Mary Shelley was married to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and was the author of "Frankenstein"
