MARRIAGE, A NOVEL
EDINBURGH: WILLIAM BLACKWOOD & LONDON: JOHN MURRAY, 1818
8vo, first edition, a three volume set, pp,4,319,314,343, half-titles to volumes one and three, original boards neatly rebacked with paper labels to spines, uncut, 4pp publisher's advertisements to the front of volume one, some mild foxing and a little damp soiling to the final few pages, a decent copy of a rare item.
This is the first novel of Ferrier, regarded as "The Scottish Jane Austen". It tells the story of an English heiress Lady Juliane who elopes with an impoverished Scot, Henry Douglas and has to adjust to living in a run-down castle in the Highlands.
Ferrier came from a family which was well known in Edinburgh 'Society'. Some of her characters were based on real and recognisable people of her acquaintance.
